How age is calculated

Age is counted in completed years, then completed months, then the remaining days. If the day of the month has not yet been reached, one month is “borrowed” and replaced by the number of days in the previous month — the same way you would count on a calendar.

Example: born on 15 March 2004, the age on 1 August 2026 is 22 years, 4 months and 17 days — 8,174 days in all.

Leap years are handled automatically. Someone born on 29 February completes a year on 28 February in non-leap years.

Age as on a cut-off date (exams and jobs)

Government recruitment notices state the age limit “as on” a particular date, which is often not today. SSC, banking, railway and state PSC exams commonly use dates like 1 January or 1 August of the exam year.

  1. Set Date of birth exactly as on your Class 10 certificate — that is the date recruiters accept.
  2. Set Age on to the cut-off date from the notification.
  3. Compare the result with the minimum and maximum age, including any relaxation for your category (typically 3 years for OBC, 5 years for SC/ST and 10 years for PwBD in central government posts).
Always read the official notification: some exams count a candidate as eligible only if born on or after / on or before specific dates, which can differ by a day from a simple age count.

What else the calculator shows

  • Your age in total months, weeks and days.
  • Your next birthday — the date, the weekday and how many days are left.
