CBSE: CGPA × 9.5

Percentage = CGPA × 9.5

CBSE arrived at the factor 9.5 from the average marks of students who scored grade A1 (91–100) across subjects, which works out to about 95. So a CGPA of 9.0 indicates about 85.5%, and 10 CGPA about 95%.

CBSE moved from CGPA to marks for Class 10 from 2018. The 9.5 rule applies to older CGPA mark sheets.

University formulas

Engineering and other universities set their own conversion rules. These are the ones most widely used — but your university's latest circular, transcript or a conversion certificate from your college is the authority:

1095%100%92.5%82%92.5%
985.5%90%82.5%74.9%82.5%

766.5%70%62.5%60.7%62.5%
657%60%52.5%53.6%52.5%
  • VTU: Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10
  • Mumbai University: Percentage = 7.1 × CGPA + 11
  • AKTU: Percentage = CGPA × 10 − 7.5
  • Many autonomous colleges and NITs: Percentage = CGPA × 10

If your university uses something else, choose Custom formula and enter its multiplier and offset — for example 10 and −7.5 for “CGPA × 10 − 7.5”.

Percentage to CGPA

Switch to % → CGPA to go the other way. The calculator reverses the same formula: for CBSE, CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5, so 76% is 8.0 CGPA.

SGPA, CGPA and percentage

  • SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is your average grade point for one semester, weighted by course credits.
  • CGPA (Cumulative GPA) averages all semesters so far, weighted by each semester's credits.
  • Use our GPA calculator to work out SGPA and CGPA from your grades first, then convert CGPA to percentage here.

Common mistakes when converting

  • Using CBSE's × 9.5 for a university CGPA. University formulas differ; × 9.5 is CBSE's rule for school grades.
  • Converting SGPA instead of CGPA. Most forms ask for the cumulative figure across all semesters.
  • Rounding too early. Convert first, then round the percentage to two decimals as the form asks.
  • Mixing 10-point and 4-point scales. Divide by the right maximum — a 3.5/4 GPA is not 35%.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert CGPA to percentage?

For CBSE, multiply by 9.5: 8.4 CGPA = 79.8%. For universities, use their formula — select it in the calculator, or enter your own.

What is 9 CGPA in percentage?

85.5% by the CBSE formula and 90% on a straight × 10 scale. Other universities differ — for example 82.5% under the VTU formula.

Why does CBSE multiply by 9.5?

Because the average marks of students who scored the top grade (A1, 91–100) in each subject came to about 95%, so 10 CGPA was mapped to 95%.

Which formula should I put on a job or admission form?

The one stated on your mark sheet or in your university's rules. If unsure, ask your college for a CGPA-to-percentage conversion certificate — employers and foreign universities usually accept that.

Divide by the same factor. For CBSE, CGPA = percentage ÷ 9.5; for a × 10 scale, CGPA = percentage ÷ 10.

What is 8.5 CGPA in percentage?
