How SGPA is calculated

SGPA = Σ (Credits × Grade point) ÷ Σ Credits

Each subject's grade point is multiplied by its credits, the results are added up and divided by the total credits. Subjects with more credits count more.

Example semester (10-point scale)
SubjectCreditsGradePointsCredits × points
Mathematics4A+936
Physics4A832
Programming3O1030
English3B+721
Lab2A816
Total16135

SGPA = 135 ÷ 16 = 8.44.

How CGPA is calculated

CGPA = Σ (Semester credits × SGPA) ÷ Σ Semester credits

Example: 8.2 SGPA in a 22-credit semester and 8.6 in another 22-credit semester give CGPA = (22 × 8.2 + 22 × 8.6) ÷ 44 = 8.4. If the semesters had different credits, the larger one would weigh more — which is why a simple average of SGPAs can be slightly wrong.

Letter gradeGrade pointMeaning
O10Outstanding
A+9Excellent
A8Very good
B+7Good
B6Above average
C5Average
P4Pass
F0Fail
Marks ranges for each grade vary by university (often absolute, sometimes relative). Use the grade printed on your result.

4-point scale

US universities use a 4.0 scale: A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D = 1.0, F = 0. Indian students applying abroad often need their GPA on this scale; many universities ask for a WES or university-issued evaluation rather than a self-calculated conversion.

Most Indian universities award a first class with distinction at a CGPA of about 7.5 and above, and a first class at 6.5 and above — but the cut-offs vary, so check your university's ordinance.

How to raise your CGPA

  • Focus on high-credit subjects — a 4-credit subject moves your SGPA twice as much as a 2-credit one.
  • Don't neglect labs and projects — they are easier to score in and carry credits too.
  • Clear backlogs early — a failed (F) subject pulls the CGPA down until it is cleared.
  • Plan ahead with this calculator — enter the grades you expect to see what CGPA you can reach by the end of the year.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate SGPA?

Multiply each subject's credits by its grade point, add them up, and divide by the total credits. Enter your subjects in the calculator to get it instantly.

How is CGPA different from SGPA?

SGPA covers one semester; CGPA covers all semesters so far, with each semester weighted by its credits.

Can I average my SGPAs to get CGPA?

Only if every semester has the same credits. Otherwise weight each SGPA by its semester's credits, as this calculator does.

How do I convert CGPA to percentage?

It depends on your university. Use our CGPA to Percentage calculator, which includes CBSE and common university formulas and a custom option.

What is a good CGPA?

On a 10-point scale, 8 and above is generally considered very good, 7–8 good, and 6–7 average. Many companies set a cut-off of 6 or 6.5 CGPA for campus placements.
